Beautiful Disaster- Discussion #1

It's TIME!
Time to start DISCUSSING our August book selection!

If you missed it...

This month we read

Beautiful Disaster
by
Jamie McGuire

The new Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn’t drink or swear, and she has the appropriate percentage of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance between her and the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University's Walking One-Night Stand.

Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby needs—and wants—to avoid. He spends his nights winning money in a floating fight ring, and his days as the ultimate college campus charmer. Intrigued by Abby’s resistance to his appeal, Travis tricks her into his daily life with a simple bet. If he loses, he must remain abstinent for a month. If Abby loses, she must live in Travis’s apartment for the same amount of time.
Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match.

FYI.. if you  have NOT read this book yet..
you may want to come back
later for the questions.. there WILL be spoilers!

Here is the current cover.

1. Why do you think the cover was changed?

Okay, can I say that I hate both covers equally??

I'm admittedly a cover whore. I definitely buy books because of their covers, but for me, this book has been hurt because of the cover. I'm a reviewer and this book has been on my review site for months where I could pick it up for free, but haven't simply because of that cover.

If it hadn't been our book this month, I probably never would have read it simply because of the cover. That's bad, especially considering how much I loved the book. After reading it, I went out and bought a physical copy of the book, but I still hate the cover and don't think it does anything for the book.

Christi, I'm going to have to agree with you. The original cover is just awful. I also base my initial reaction on the cover of a book. If it grabs my attention in a good way, I will at least read the description. The original cover would definitely deter me from picking it up in a bookstore. The current cover is pretty, and it would catch my attention, but to me it doesn't correlate to the story.

Yup, definately do like the first cover! It's just OBNOXIOUS! But I really love the updated cover. I'm not sure I would have picked this book up, based solely on the cover, but I do like it. I agree with you Brooke, the cover (either of them) don't really tell me what the book is about!

I do not like either covers, but the original, is just awful! The title and either cover just do not flow and you have no clue as to what the book may be about. I would not have bought these books based on the covers. I have a good friend, whom we have the similar taste in books and begged me to get this book a few months ago. If it wasn't for her, I would not have ever picked this up off a bookshelf.

Totally agree, don't like either cover at all, if I had to pick one it would be the original cover. Also grabs my attention in a good way, like the colors, the ink, don't really get why it's on a tongue. The second cover is just blah unless it's because of the fights in the basements and kind if like a spider web / dreary kind of feel.

I agree with all of you, both covers are terrible, but the first one is so obnoxious! No way would I ever pick up that book in a store...no matter how good it's said to be. That being said, while the 2nd cover is ugly, I do think it fits a little better. But, I didn't think that until AFTER I read the book.

I dislike the first cover MORE than the second but I don't like the second one either. I agree that I wouldn't buy this book based on the cover. In fact, I have the Kindle version and I'm glad I don't have to look at either one of those ugly covers.

I really hate the first cover and I am pretty sure I would have never picked up this book based on that cover only. The 2nd cover is better, but I am not far enough into the book to know if it fits just yet. Seriously- I am still on the first chapter. lol. They were smart to change the cover although the jury is still out on whether or not they changed it to the right cover.

Not a fan of either cover, I don't think either represents the story. :(

I absolutely do not like the first cover and really neither cover would have made me pick up the book and read it. With that said, I think the second cover speaks to the beauty of the relationship between Abby and Travis much like that of the butterfly, but kept in the jar in relation to Abby keeping her secrets about her life before Eastern.

Hi ! I prefer the cover with the butterfly. The first one is just too gross to look at . Below I've posted my thoughts on the book because, I don't really know where else to go , to share my thoughts about it.

Beautiful Disaster is one of my favourite books. I love Travis and Abby's love story and I adore Travis despite the fact that, Travis can be possessive and does some very over the top things, to keep Abby.

I look past all the unhealthy things and see the love. does this make me naive because I enjoy it , despite the unhealthiness in the relationship?

As I wrote above, it's one of my favourite books but I can't stop thinking about what type of person that makes me, because I enjoy it despite the unhealthy parts in the book?

Thankyou,
