Pidgeon. Beautiful Disaster- Discussion #3

Pidgeon.

The nick name that Travis calls Abby.
From the first time they meet...

Excerpt from the book:
“Abs? What are you, a workout video?" he sneered.
"Pigeon?" I said with the same amount of disdain. "An annoying bird that craps all over the sidewalk?"
You like Pigeon," he said defensively. "It's a dove, an attractive girl, a winning card in poker, take your pick. You're my Pigeon.”

Did you like it? Hate it? Indifferent?

Did you wonder WHY he called her Pidgeon
rather than anything else?

OR...
did you GET where the author was coming from and her reasoning for Pidgeon?

{ I didn't actually put it together until I read an interview where Jamie McGuire explained it.}

Excerpt from Interview with Jamie...

Lily:
"When he calls her Pidge, was that something he got from Lady and the Tramp, and did you realize the little analogy there?"
Jamie:
"Yes! Finally someone caught it! Travis is the school Tramp…he calls Abby, the only woman he considers a “lady”, Pigeon. I am awestruck at the number of people that don’t get it."

Wow, I didn't see that meaning behind the name but now I love it even more:) I have to admit, I'm a sucker for terms of endearment. Hubby hardly ever calls me Amber, it's always "pretty lady" or something close to it, haha! I loved that Travis gave her the nickname, it showed how much he cared for her from the start. He didn't give any of his ho's nicknames so it made Abby special. I didn't ever really wonder why either but I'm glad to know now:)

Whoa! I never got the Lady and the Tramp analogy, but that makes so much more sense now. I never minded the nickname when he called her it. I thought it was kind of sweet, but it didn't work for me as a tattoo. It just seemed wrong to have "Pigeon" tattooed on his arm.

I didn't see the connection, but I have never watched Lady & The Tramp all the way through. I love that Travis gave Abby a nickname. It made him seem more vulnerable to me...more sensitive.

I never got the lady and the tramp analogy, but thought it was sweet he gave her a nickname, like that she was on a different level to him, from the beginning.

I don't love it as a nickname. I think pigeons are totally gross and I wouldn't want anyone to call me something that I found disgusting. I'm not hip with the whole lingo of the term being used in any other way. I've seen Lady and the Tramp and I still don't get the reference at all.

I had no clue why he was calling her "Pigeon". I loved that he had a sweet nickname for her as well- but every time I read it I imagined a bird pooping on the sidewalk. lol I haven't watched Lady and the Tramp in years but it was always a favorite. :)
