Since we're all talking books, I hope it's okay if I share this... (And if it's not, Amber, please tell me and I'll take it down, k?)
I write children's books. The current series is about a guinea pig and his owner, Zamboni and Billy. The big joke between me and Amber is that I get nightmares from the paranormal genre, and Amber gets nightmares from books about guinea pigs and little kids! LOL So not true on Amber's part, but definitely true on mine!
I feel so honored that Pedrito, the son of our sweet friends Paloma and Pedro, chose to use my book, Zamboni's Bath, as the basis for a school project. He invited me to watch his presentation. On Wednesday Emma (my 4-year-old granddaughter) and I drove to RI to celebrate Pedrito's project.
The event turned into an "Author's Visit." The teachers asked about my background, how I became an author, what my writing process is, etc. The kids asked lots of questions about being an author. Then they asked me to read my book. I have not read to a group of children since I quit teaching 8 years ago~and I must say that I've really missed it! They wanted to know all about my other Zamboni books waiting to be published. So I shared the titles and let them guess at the plots. It was so fun to hear their ideas! They were all so excited and begged me to come back when the next one is published. The whole thing made me feel so happy~watching children enjoy the book and feeling excited to write their own stories is a far greater reward
than royalties!
After I read the book, Pedrito did a fabulous job presenting his project. He used props that he made from clay to retell the story. I was quite impressed~especially since he's only six! Here we are with his copy of the book and his project.
The really hilarious part about all of this is that the kids think I am a celebrity! LOL They kept saying, "Wow! You're a real live author!" (Yes, I am thankful that I'm not a dead author! Ha ha!) They really think I am famous. They have no idea how anonymous and unglamorous I am~and happy to be that way. Though a million-dollar bestseller would be nice...
Thanks for letting me share!

What a fun day and fun thing for you to be able to do. It sounds like it was fabulous!
Vicki, where can we buy your books? smiles...
Sounds like everyone had a wonderful time! How exciting! and what a sweet pic to remember forever!
Yes, Vicki! Where can we buy your books! My son is 7 and is interested in starting a series! We're currently reading HP and a Hamster one, but we're always on the lookout for the next big thing :)
Thanks!
hugs, margie
OMG Vicki, how exciting!!! That was so sweet of the little boy, you ARE a celebrity:) I'm with the others, where can we buy your books? And can I send it to you and get it autographed? I think that would be so awesome!
Aww, you guys are so sweet~but you totally missed the part about me so NOT being a celebrity! LOL At least elementary kids thing I'm cool. Of course, most of them don't yet know about JK Rowling. But Emma, my granddaughter, thinks it's cool, and that's all that really matters. She loves to check the local library and gets so excited if the book is checked out!
Margie, if only I could come up with "the next big thing!" When I was 8, I sat on my dad's lap and announced that I was going to write children's books. So even if my stuff is never "the next big thing," at least my dream was realized. Rick, of course, wants to know why I didn't dream about being published AND making a million dollars! LOL What cam I say? I was only 8!
I write for an educational publisher. The book is used as part of the reading curriculum for 2nd grade to transition kids from picture books to chapter books. They want it to be at least a 10 book series. I've written 6 so far. One has been published. Two or three more are scheduled for this year. I hope that really happens!
