50 Shades of Grey Discussion #1

In case people are still reading, I'm going to start out by talking about more general things.

1. How do you feel about the genre of erotic romance? We've never read one before for this group. Is this a genre you would read again or have read in the past?

2. How do you feel about fan fiction? Does the term turn you off to a book?

1. I have no issues with erotic romance. I really enjoy reading them and I think this book specifically will be interesting to discuss when it comes to those aspects.

2. Fan fiction...I've never read it and I still can't see the correlation with this book although I know it's there. If I had been able to see it, I might have had an issue with it because they are VERY different books and I love them in VERY different ways.

I read a lot of erotic romance, so no issues for me. LOL

Let me start off by saying, when I read the Twilight series, I had my foot in a cast for 3 months. Then, I broke and dislocated my shoulder and had that immobilized for 4 months. I had a LOT OF TIME on my hands. LOL

With that being said, I did read a lot of fan fiction. I liked some of it, didn't like others. Just like with books, it depended on the story and the writing.

With this book, I enjoyed the story itself. However, MY issue (and it is only my issue) is that the comparisons were distracting to me. Certain characteristics, descriptions, and dialog were like deja vu for me. Do I think this is a terrible book? No. I just couldn't get past the similarities to enjoy it. I hope that makes sense. :)

1. I think we all know that I love erotic romance. Though I did NOT know that this was one when I agreed to host it. I'm also surprised at how this book has taken off with it being an erotic romance. I didn't know that the market was so big for this genre or that they would sell it at TARGET! I read erotic romance mixed in with all the other genres I read. I do enjoy it a lot but I can't read it all the time.

2. I've never read fan fiction before. I don't think that I would seek it out but I'm not against it. I'm sure I could write EXCELLENT fan fiction myself. ;)

1.Is it just me? I really didn't think this classifies as erotica. I just didn't think it was as "racy?" I don't know if that's the right word, as it was hyped up to be. Yes, I guess because of the BDSM aspect. Anyway, I've read erotica for years mixed in with everything else I read so it wasn't new to me.
2. I knew it was fan fic before I started, so that's hard to answer because I don't know if I drew all the correlations based on that or not.

1. I just started the book and have made it to the trip to Christian's house and the surprise. So far I'm not having a problem with it and don't think I will.
2.I'm ok with fan fiction. I like a book because I read it myself.
