50 Shades of Grey Discussion #2

Let's talk about Christian Grey!

1. How do you feel about Christian? Like him? Hate him? Wanna punch him in the face?

2. How do you feel about his backstory? Do you think it's believable in making him the way he is?

3. Do you think he's a good Dom?

*sigh* OMG, I love Christian. His backstory is so heartwrenching, how can you not love him? The little bits of vulnerability that he shows just melt my heart.

It's interesting because we were friends a few years ago that adopted a little boy when he was 4 (we knew him when he was ages 12-14) and I always got the feeling his back-story was much like Christian's...horribly tragic. He's the same age as Jacob and when we knew him, he was so filled with rage. I could see how the whole Dom/sub scene could help to channel some of those over-the-top emotions. He was so emotionally tormented and that came out in so many different ways, but mainly he couldn't feel any emotion besides rage. Really sad.

Honestly, it's hard to judge Christian's Dom skills since they never truly get into that scene. I have a feeling that he's a good Dom because before Ana he had the ability to stay above the actions...more like an observer. It was once he became emotionally involved that things got more difficult.

I can't imagine writing these books. He's such a complex character and EL James got that across so beautifully. I think she's especially effective since we only see him through Ana. It's so much harder to show the true nature of a character through only observations and not the inner workings of their thoughts and minds. I thought she wrote Christian BRILLIANTLY.

I'm with Christi... how can you NOT love Christian?! But... I'm always a sucker for the tormented souls... I seek them out in real life, so why wouldn't I be drawn towards them in literature as well..? LOL I do find aspects of his personality and the way he changes emotions so quickly to be frustrating... I would be feeling the same way that Ana is on many occasions... confused because you just don't know exactly what he is thinking and WHY.

The backstory is definitely heartbreaking... I thought it was completely believable... and does make sense with why he hates to be touched... needs control over situations... doesn't depend on others... etc. Chrisian's past is explored further in the second book.. more information is given. ( I am only about 25% in) The first book didn't go into depth with his past like I wished it had... BUT it made me purchase the sequel as soon as I read the last page... so.. the author is pretty smart not giving it all away in the first book...

overall.. I think Christian is an extremely interesting character! :)

1. I don't like Christian. Isn't that weird? I love alpha males. Perhaps because I'm only seeing him from Ana's point of view and I don't know what he's thinking. I see glimpses of him I enjoy but overall I don't like him. Sometimes I want to punch him in the face. I also don't like how he talks like he's 70. I guess that's because he's a young business man and wants to be taken seriously. I think he sounds ridiculous.

2. I think his backstory is heart wrenching and I look forward to see what else has happened and more details about him. I can see how a past like that can shape a person into how Christian is.

3. I'm really unsure about this. Doms are supposed to be able to read their subs and I don't think he can ever really read Ana which makes me feel like he shouldn't be pushing her so much. Also, I think a good dom is all about aftercare and making sure subs feel really safe and I don't think he does that AT ALL. I feel like she's always left hanging afterwards and it breaks my heart.

Did you read all three books Ashley? I'm wondering if my thoughts may be a bit skewed because they are in a true relationship in bks 2 & 3 and just play at the Dom/sub scene...

I haven't read the other 2. So, we'll see if my opinion on him changes. You'd like I would like him better being that we are VERY similar but perhaps that's why I don't like him. Or maybe it's because I draw a lot a parallels with my past and his. I don't know, he just rubs me the wrong way.

I bought 2 & 3 on my kindle because I couldn't wait for the print copies. Do you want to borrow them?? They should be lendable.

Ashley Newell said...

Yes, please! Amber lent me the e-Pubs but the kids are always playing with the iPad so I never get to use it. They don't like my boring Kindle b/c there's no games.

Christi said...

Well, crap. I just went and looked and they're not loanable. What's up with that when I paid $10 each for those!?!? That's weird.

I'm kind of afraid to answer because I have a different perspective of the book, but here goes.

1. I thought he was arrogant, but I could see the appeal to Ana.

2. I wish the back story went more in depth in this book. I can see why he is so controlling and feels more secure knowing what is going to happen. I also found it believable that he fell so much for
Ana that he would have vanilla sex.

3. I think he was, before Ana, but it just didn't seem like a traditional Dom/sub relationship to me. So, I'm still on the fence about that one.

1. Ok I hated Christian. I think I identified more with Kate. I could also see the appeal to Anna though. I dated a guy like him once (minus the whole BDSM thing ;) ) and no matter how much of a d*&k he was I kept going back for more. I was young and inexperienced though, so I think it was the whole "I can't believe he would actually be interested in me" thing.
2. Well ok, I feel bad for him but I think too often people use their past as an excuse for their bad behavior. We all make choices and we have to deal with them. I think Anna showed more maturity than Christian on that front.
3. I don't really have an opinion here...all I keep seeing is the "red room of pain" and I get the creeps..not really the good kind ;)
