50 Shades of Grey Discussion #3

1. How do you feel about Ana? What do you like about her? Dislike?

2. Do you think her innocence is believable? Do you think her decision making seems to match the character she's portrayed as?

I think her innocence is believable when it comes to being a virgin. In book #1 she talks about never having held a guys hand or kissed another guy and I absolutely don't find that believable. Those things are refuted in books 2 and 3 (a minor inconsistency in the novels.)

For the most part, I do like Ana. I love her growth and sense of self-confidence that develops over the entire series. Even though Christian intimidates the hell out of her, she doesn't let it show and I like that. I like that she's upfront with him about how unsure she is about all this. I like her honesty.

I didn't like the way she let Kate push her around. I wanted to kick Kate a lot of the time and just wanted Ana to stand up to her the way she would Christian.

1. I like Ana. At first, I didn't like her inner monologue but then I pictured her as a young Zooey Dashenel type and it make her endearing. For once, I liked the heroine in the book more which NEVER happens in romance books. I liked her adventurous spirit and the fact that she knew what she wanted. I also liked that she wanted to earn her own way in life.

2. I think if the whole hand holding/kissing thing gets refuted than it's very believable. I know girls who were virgins until they got married, though it's not the norm anymore, it happens. I think her decision making was slightly skewed for someone so innocent.

1. I thought Ana was too much of a doormat. I wanted to scream at her "get a backbone!!". LOL I liked how driven she was, but like Christi, I hated how she let Kate treat her.

2. Yes, I think her innocence is believable. I've had friends that didn't even date or notice boys until they were in their early 20's, so it is possible. Rare? You betcha! But, possible. I wouldn't expect someone so inexperienced to be so eager, but I guess it's possible.

I don't love Ana...I'm trying to like her. I can't stand her insecurity, I don't get it.
I'm not so sure I believe her innocence because of the fact that she can stand up to Christian so easily, that is something that is (normally) learned through a few relationships and it also doesn't go along with her insecurity about "being enough" for him. So I don't know yet...

I liked Ana. I thought she was believable, but I don't really think some of her decisions matched her innocence. But then I can kind of see how having no frame of reference to work from would make it easier to end up where she does. She just wants Christian, however she can have him.
